Purpose

 

LWF is a faith-based organization with a strong commitment to the human rights and a long-lasting engagement with the UN.

The Department for Theology, Mission and Justice (DTMJ) is primarily responsible for programs and themes geared towards supporting the presence and witness of the member churches (MCs) of the Lutheran World Federation – a Communion of Churches (LWF) globally and locally. DTMJ also houses the advocacy unit of the LWF.

The Action for Justice is a team located in DTMJ under the leadership of the Head of Advocacy and dedicated to represent and promote LWF programmatic work carried out worldwide at local and national levels on the following themes: human rights, gender justice, climate justice and interfaith and peace. Using the Local to Global methodology, the Action for Justice team ensures that issues related to these themes are developed in MCs and in World Service (WS) country programs and reported through global mechanisms focusing on the United Nations and its High Commissioners for refugees and human rights, in a highly political international environment.

The main purpose of the position is to focus on advocacy for gender justice in close cooperation with the unit for theological studies, ensuring advocacy is rooted in Lutheran theology.

In consistence with LWF policies, Assembly and Council resolutions the purpose of this position is to contribute to enhanced capacity and awareness on gender justice and women´s human rights in member churches and World Service country programs.

In her-his role, the incumbent will handle, share and safeguard information relevant to the theme, provide logistics in organising travels and events.

 

Required Qualifications

  • University degree in Gender Studies or equivalent.
  • Training in project management.
  • Proficiency in English, and ideally French, German and Spanish.
  • Advanced level in office suite, database and content management system (CMS).
  • Knowledge of financial administration or bookkeeping/accounting.

 

Additional Study and Experience

  • At least 3-year international experience preferably with faith-based/ ecumenical organization.
  • Working experience in relation with development project management in gender mainstreaming and development issues.
  • Proven experience in writing English advocacy/communication papers accessible to various audiences.
  • Proven ability to interact and work in various cultural environments.
  • Knowledge of LWF member churches, mission societies, LWF related agencies and/or ecumenical organizations.

Position Environment and Dimensions

Internally, as a member of the Action for Justice team, mainly interacts with the Program Executive for Gender Justice & Women’s Empowerment, with DTMJ Support Team, with WS staff, with the Gender focal group, with communication staff in DPC, and regional secretaries. Collaborates with other DTMJ program staff and LWF departments on project management issues and coordination, in particular with AFJ and WS programs.

Externally, interacts and cooperates worldwide with UN and other relevant inter-governmental bodies, INGOs, missions, related agencies, MCs, ecumenical organizations and donors.

 

 

 

Main Duties

Advocacy

Coordinates LWF’s engagement with the UN Convention on the Elimination of all Forms of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW), SDG5, Commission on the Status of Women (CSW) and relevant international mechanisms for the protection and promotion of Gender justice.

Provides capacity building training on CEDAW and women human rights advocacy in general for MCs and country programs.

Organizes lobbying meetings in Geneva and other capitals with missions and INGOs for representatives from/of MCs and country programs.

Researches and develops policy papers emerging from LWF’s advocacy work on Gender Justice.

Supports the development of policy positions in relevant thematic areas; supports in the writing and editing of CEDAW reports and advocacy papers.

Monitors developments, attends meetings, workshops and events related to women’s human rights.

Carries out advocacy with a particular focus on Sexual and Gender Based Violence, Women’s Empowerment, Sexual and Reproductive Health Rights.

Contributes from a gender justice perspective to policy development and advocacy in other areas of concern for the LWF.

Communication Support

Processes information and data on RBA projects for presentation purposes.

Feeds LWF communication and resource mobilisation with appropriate facts and messages on RBA projects.

Administrative and Coordination Support

Liaises with WS country programs and MCs in the coordination and monitoring of women’s rights related L2G2L programs/projects.

Liaises with other staff such as PMER and Resource Mobilization colleagues on risk management, donors’ compliance and fundraising.

Arranges meetings, conferences, travels and visitors’ logistics.

Prepares payment vouchers and monitors expenditures.

Ensures a proper information/data/documentation management, including inputting data into dedicated software tool.

Major Challenges

To promote Gender Justice that is rooted in Lutheran theology and consistent with international conventions and norms, in cooperation with country programs and MCs that may have different positions.
