In many cultural traditions, women are considered inferior to men and even as a form of property for male family members. Decision making around their lives is often made by male relatives or other male authority figures.
In all countries globally women can face challenges in reporting abuse, physical assault or sexual violence; both from legal systems that make this difficult and from family and communities that downplay the seriousness of these crimes.
